Do QR codes expire? The honest answer
28 June 2026 · 4 min read
The short answer: no, a QR code cannot expire. The pattern is just data. What can expire is the service sitting behind a dynamic code — and that is where people get burned.
Why some codes stop working
Several popular generators offer a 'free dynamic QR code', then disable the redirect after a 7 or 14 day trial. The printed flyers are already out, and the only way to make them work again is a subscription. The code did not expire; the redirect was switched off on purpose.
Static codes never have this problem, because there is no server to switch off.
How to protect yourself before printing
Check the wording. 'Free trial', 'first 14 days' or 'limited scans' next to a dynamic code is a warning sign. Also check what happens when you stop paying: does the redirect keep working, or does it show an upgrade page?
- Prefer providers that state redirects keep working on the free plan
- Keep a static backup of anything printed in large volume
- Test the printed code again a month after the campaign starts
Where myqrpal stands
Redirects work forever, including on the free plan. Paying unlocks longer analytics history, full design control and every export format — it never unlocks the ability of your printed code to keep working.
